Wolverhampton celebrates Vaisakhi

Thousands of people took part in Wolverhampton’s 17th annual Vaisakhi procession

The faithful attending the Nagar Kirtan (procession) on a Sunday April morning, enjoyed warm, sunny weather. The procession set off from the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Sedgley Street, Wolverhampton.

Amid the procession was a beautifully decorated float carrying Guru Granth Sahib Jee - a book of Sikh scripture, considered by Sikhs to be a living, breathing guru.
Guru Nanak Gurdwara, off Sedgley Street, held Wolverhampton’s first Vaisakhi procession in 1990. Over the years Wolverhampton’s other Sikh temples have also held their own processions. In 2007, for the first time, nine of the city’s Sikh temples have taken part.

The Sikh temples involved in this year’s Nagar Kirtan:
Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara,
Nanaksar Taath Ishar Darbaar,
Guru Nanak Gurdwara (Duncan Street,
off Segley Street)
Guru Nanak Gurdwara (Cannock Road),
Guru Nanank Gurdwara (Wednesfield),
Bhagat Ravidas Temple,
Guru Nanak Gurdwara, (Arthur Street Bilston),
Guru Nanak Gurdwara (Lea Road),
Ramgharia Board Sikh Temple (near West Park) and
Ramgharia Board Sikh Association (Temple Street).
